He’s doing it again—digging for the diamond ring that plopped out of his hand the night he proposed in the middle of a cornfield.
“Honey, just give up.” I hand him a glass of lemonade.
“Never.”
Two hours later, he runs into the kitchen, smiling huge through sweat and tears.
My heart skips a beat. “You find it?”
“Nope. But I realized something.”
“What?”
“Forty years ago, that ring became a seed that grew into something more precious than any diamond could ever be. Us. I think I best leave it be.”
His kiss is sweet and salty.

This story is inspired by the marriage of Connie and Russell Gayer. They are funny, loving, dedicated, committed and loyal, even after decades together. Their marriage is truly a treasure and an inspiration in more ways than one!
Thank you too, to our Friday Fictioneers leader, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. As I’ve said to you many times before, you, too, are an inspiration!

Dear Jan,
I can just see this adorable couple. Lovely tribute to two sweet people. Of course if Russell reads this I’ll deny calling him anything but salty. 😉 Good one.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Normally I wouldn’t choose a photo like that but when I saw it on Facebook, I considered the “subject matter” and asked Connie for permission. This one was just too good to pass up. 😀

The nature of the lost thing never found. Well done. It’s like tilting at windmills, but with a shovel.

Josh, your story was one of my favorites. (I’m a dog lover and have lost a few in my life.) You captured the feeling of having a dog in one’s life beautifully. Here it is, for anyone who’d like to read it: http://hawesescapes.com/time/

Love it… indeed sometimes you have to admire what comes out of the seed…. let the ring be.

What may grow from a seed is a mystery that requires faith to let it be. Thanks, Björn!
