#FlashFriday #Fictioneers: Mo’s Shadow

This week’s photo prompt by Madison Woods came at a perfect time, as I’m currently working on a story for a Bigfoot anthology. Following is an excerpt from my story titled, “Mo’s Shadow.” In this excerpt, she has just seen the shadow of something moving in the woods. She hopes it’s her brother, Shiloh, playing tricks on her again. But, maybe not . . .

I can’t wait to see the variety of stories the Fictioneers will write for this prompt! Click here to read other Fictioneer stories.

Mo’s Shadow

“Shiloh! Is that you out there? I know it’s you, and you best come out right now.”

Silence.

“It’s gonna be dark soon,” Mo taunted. “I’m gonna head back to the house and you’re gonna be out here all by yourself.”

Silence.

“Mama’s gonna tan your hide if you’re not in by dark.”

Silence.

She tried hard to convince herself it was wind that had rustled the leaves just behind her. But no. It was a new sound. Someone laughing. Something about laughter in the dark gave her the heebie-jeebies.

She ran home, darned sure that giggle hadn’t come from Shiloh.

I hope he’s OK! I wouldn’t want to go into the woods there, I’m sure….

I didn’t know Bigfoot had a sense of humor! Nice job – and great use of the repeated word “silence”.

It didn’t even occur to me to reference Bigfoot, great idea and another great tale. I hope Shiloh is safe!

I see now why they had all those commercials about messing with Bigfoot. If those critters are going to dish it out, they need to learn how to take it. I look forward to hearing the ending of the longer version 🙂

Very chilling! How horrific a giggle can be at the wrong time in the wrong place.
    Nice one.

I liked this one – and even without the context you gave it at the beginning I totally knew what was going on and how I was supposed to feel. Nice one, and thanks for your comment!

  11. It would be terrible if something happened to Shiloh. Spooky little tale.

  12. There’s something much more sinister about a giggle in the dark than a maniacal laugh in the sunshine. Unless, of course, you know who’s giggling. And why. But we won’t go into that! Mine’s here: http://marilynkaydennis.wordpress.com/2012/06/15/madison-woods-friday-fictioneers-witch

I have a feeling she raced home only to find Shiloh waiting for her on the porch…giggling. The question is: Who was the other giggler? I’m on the linky thingy but just in case, here I am: http://www.triplemoonstar.blogspot.com

    A great story Jan.
I enjoyed the somewhat sinister ‘giggle’. Amazing how one simple word can sometimes evoke fear.

LOL, I had forgotten all about Shiloh by the end. Only when I read the comments did I remember. Geez, I guess I wouldn’t be a good partner on a dangerous hike!
